Saul Bass (May 8, 1920 - April 25, 1996) was a renowned American graphic designer , best known for his work in the film industry and in the design of some of the most important corporate identities U.S..


Saul Bass was born in the Bronx, in 1920 . From childhood he was very creative and spent many hours a day drawing . Bass studied at the Art League studio in New York and then the Brooklyn College, whose teacher was Gyorgy Kepes, an Hungarian graphic designer who had worked with László Moholy-Nagy in Berlin before emigrating to the United States. Kepes was introduced to Saul Bass to Moholy's Bauhaus and Russian Constructivism .




After working in several design firms in New York, Bass worked independently as a graphic designer (or "commercial artist" as they are commonly called). Bass decided to move to Los Angeles "in 1946, because in New York was having many obstacles to develop creatively. opened his own studio in 1950 , devoted primarily to advertising until Preminger invited him to design the poster for his film in 1954, Carmen Jones . This one was very impressed by the work of Bass and asked to design the title sequence of the film also . Then followed the design of film titles The Big Knife by Robert Aldrich and The Seven Year Itch (The Seven Year Itch) Billy Wilder . But it was in the following project Preminger, The Man with the Golden Arm (The Man With the Golden Arm) , Where Bass was revealed as a master of design credits of movies.


Bass went on his way in the world of design in film. Martin Scorsese widely recognized him. He collaborated with Alfred Hitchcock and was even participating in the famous film Psycho in the shower scene, which is said that he was responsible for the story board, but Hitchcock never recognized . Along with his second wife, Elaine, designed titles for other directors. then directed several short films including The Searching Eye (1964), From Here to There (1964) and Why Man Creates (1968) which won an Oscar. Finally made a film as director in 1974, called Phase IV.


then returned to the commercial graphic design. Among the most successful emblems includes AT & T, United Airlines, Minolta, Bell, and Warner Communications. He also designed the poster for the Olympic Games in Los Angeles in 1984.


Until the end of his life he working with his idol Martin Scorsese in Goodfellas, Cape Fear (The Cape Fear), The Age of Innocence (The Age of Innocence) and Casino in the 90's .

Saul Bass falleció en 1996 .
