Sham Marriage Pair Jailed

Hungarian Viktoria Pacsi and Indian Rahul Sharma, have each been sentenced to 15 months in prison for their part in a sham marriage.

Both were arrested at Slough just before the wedding ceremony was due to start after the registrar became suspicious and contacted the UK Borders Agency (UKBA) to question the validity of the marriage.

It later emerged that Pacsi had agreed with sham marriage fixers to marry Sharma in exchange for £1,500.

Sharma had been in the UK since January 2010 and was on a valid student visa. However, he had not contacted authorities when the college which he was attending had its license revoked in September 2010.

Sharma was to pay £8,000 for the marriage, and a police raid of his home turned up £3,000 in cash.

Two more Hungarians, a man and a woman, were arrested on suspicion of possessing false identity documents in connection with the sham marriage. Both were bailed - and subsequently absconded. They are believed to be the fixers who arranged the marriage, and are now wanted by police.

Both Pacsi and Sharma entered guilty pleas to conspiracy to facilitate a breach of immigration law when they appeared at Reading Crown Court, and were sentenced to 15 months in prison.
