A religious teacher who was caught on film abusing children at a Keighley mosque has changed his plea to guilty.

Sabir Hussain, of Keighley, had originally denied ten charges of assaulting children at the Markazi Jamia Mosque in Lawkholme, but just weeks before he was due to stand trial he changed his plea and admitted to four charges of assault.

Caught by undercover cameras filming for a Channel 4 documentary, Hussain was captured on camera hitting children.

Now he is set to appear at Bradford Magistrates Court on November 23rd for sentencing.

The change of plea comes in the wake of figures obtained by BBC Radio 4's File on 4, which showed up to 500,000 children attending madrassas or Muslim religious schools in the UK, and a number of allegations of abuse.

Hussain no longer works at the Markazi Jamia Mosque according to a statement from Keighley Muslim Association.

"We welcome the pleas made in court today by which Mr Sabir Hussain has admitted his wrongdoing" said senior investigating officer Detective Superintendent Dave Pervin.

Councillor Khadim Hussain (Labour, Keighley Central) has described the incident as "unfortunate" and said that he has worked closely with the mosque, where extra safety measures have been put in place and staff members have undergone training.
