Riverside valley Park, near Countess Wear, has become the latest place in the South West to benefit from the culturally enriching and environmentally reshaping attentions of those quaint and lovable people whom we know as travellers.

In what could have been a textbook operation in enriching the local community and improving the landscape and lives of all, approximately 60 travellers swooped on Riverside Valley Park, on the outskirts of Exeter, and remained for a week before moving on.

Ever misunderstood by a hostile public and a prejudiced officialdom, the travellers left after the Environment Agency - who owned the land - took legal action to move them on.

However, in a glorious testament to the rich reshaping of the landscape and the visual enhancements which travellers can bring to an area, and leave in their wake as a reminder of their presence, caring and considerate travellers left much modern art scattered about the picturesque landscape, much to the joy of locals.

Dozens of shopping trolleys made up the eyecatching sculpture titled "We stole these from Lidls to get the £1 from the slot" - a moving comment upon consumerism and the human condition as a receptacle for groceries and the surplus baggage of life if ever there was one.

Countless bin liners and bags of rubbish were strewn about to create the modern art masterpiece "Your land, my trash, so what?". The team of artists involved have created a deep social commentary on the throwaway society, and the hostility and discrimination inherent in planning laws which will not allow random strangers to decide that your property is now their home.

Sorry Community Relations Advancement Program, the sponsorship fee just ran out there.

People are sick of travellers who flout the law, encamp where they want, leave a nightmarish mess in their wake, and who seem to be able to operate without reference to the legal system.

Between an army of do gooders telling us what a persecuted group travellers are, and laws which are open to exploitation and manipulation - even when the authorities bother applying them - too many beauty spots and nice areas are being turned into sprawling encampments and left as rubbish dumps.

It's not travellers who need the protection of the law, it is the local residents, and the wildlife which inhabits some of these beautiful areas which are reduced to refuse tips, who need the law on their side.

Professor Racquel Rolink, the UN special rapporteur on housing, has written to the government criticising moves to evict more than 400 travellers who are camped illegally at Dale Farm, Essex.

In the scathing letter, seen by the Telegraph, Professor Rolink claims that any eviction would breach the travellers human rights, and urges authorities to halt the eviction and negotiate with travellers.

To add insult to injury, she also raises the spectre of compensating the travellers saying that "It is now of utmost importance that the rights of the residents to fair compensation for their lost homes and property and the provision of adequate alternative housing are fully respected"

That's right, of course professor, lets give them some compensation and some new housing, we'll reward them for flouting planning regulations and imposing a huge cost on police and local resources.

One wonders if you would be so sympathetic to their plight and willing to champion their cause if 400 of them set up a camp right next to your own home.

Would you celebrate in the enrichment which these charming nomads brought to your local community, and welcome them with open arms as you watched property prices plummet and your community suffer massive disruption?

We'll never know the answer, most human rights pundits are nicely insulated within their ivory towers, they'll never have to experience the day to day realities which the rest of us live through, realities made far worse by the ever present spectre of human rights which have long since transcended anything so mundane as common sense.

Rights champions like Professor Rolink have ensured that there are now two groups of people within the UK - the law abiding majority who have no rights, and minorities who have an army of lawyers queueing up to turn the merest whim into a God given, legally enshrined right no matter what laws the rest of us may have to obey.

It's a sad reality that those pushing for so many of these rights for every group under the sun will never have to live with the consequences of those rights being given, the reality is something for the little people like the rest of us to bear.

Perhaps, to set an example to us all and really show that she does champion the rights of travellers, Professor Rolink will invite 400 or so of them to make camp right next to her own residence?

Didn't think so, the rights game is just one for armchair liberals, insulated as ever from the chaos and insanity of each and every decision they campaign for.

Portland Coastguard helicopter could be grounded - thanks to a group of travellers setting up camp too close to the take off area.

The camp sprang up at the end of the extended runway on Osprey Quay, leaving officials worried that the helicopter rotor blades could whip up debris which might injure traveller families.

Portland Coastguard area manager Rob Sansom said that there was "a significant risk of people being injured or glass being broken by foreign objects like debris and stones getting blown up from the helicopter taking off".

He has visited the travellers to warn them of the dangers they face, although the rest of us might be a little more concerned about the dangers those in need of rescuing by the Coastguard might face when the helicopter cannot take off.

You know what will happen if a traveller is hit by flying debris anyway - they'll sue and cost the Coastguard a bundle win or lose.

Dorset police are currently monitoring the situation.

Softly softly again then, they'd be quick enough removing a member of the non travelling public who decided to pitch a tent in the take off zone of a helicopter no doubt.

Still, we have to be sensitive, don't we.

And, in todays news from the world of politically correct UK bureaucracy, the eviction of 400 travellers from Dale Farm in Crays Hill, Essex may well be delayed because the council has decided that bailiffs need training in cultural awareness before an eviction can take place.

Until such training, and it appears as if the Basildon Council is having difficulty finding any travellers rights or representatives group willing to offer the training - no shock there - the £18 million eviction operation is on hold.

There are, apparently, concerns that their may be violent confrontations during any removal and that equalities legislation may be breached.

The travellers, who began arriving at the camp in 2001, are reported to have set up barbed wire barricades and left high pressure cannisters around the camp in readiness for what is described as a "state of war".

Still, we must be culturally sensitive, no matter that they are breaking planning laws by being there, and have all but threatened to turn any enforcement operation into a violent confrontation.

Sensitivity comes before the law any day of the week in our barmy British councils rulebook.

Never mind the law, the rubbish strewn about the camp, threats of violence, and the nightmare which local residents have to endure from having Britains largest traveller encampment on their doorstep, we've just got to make sure that no traveller is offended by a bailiff who might use a culturally insensitive term or two.

You couldn't make it up, indeed you don't need to in the lunatic asylum that is modern Britain, the truth is crazier than anything you could dream up.
