A caretaker from Uffculme has been sentenced to 18 years imprisonment for a catalogue of sexual offences, including 15 specimen charges of rape.

David Brown, 62, who worked as a caretaker in the town hall at Cullompton, is said to have raped one victim at least 400 times. Yes, 400, that isn't a typing error.

Exeter Crown Court was told that he used one victim as a "sexual plaything" as he raped her over a six year period.

Other offences included indecent assault.

Among his victims were girls as young as 9 years old.

He had denied all the charges against him, but was sentenced to a total of 18 years in jail, and told that he would serve at least 12 years.

Now, 365 days in a year, 12 years inside - and 400 rapes. That's just under 11 days in prison per rape. Even if we count only the 15 specimen charges he was convicted of, that's just 292 days per rape.

What's the lesson here? If you're going to be a rapist then do it as many times as you can before you get caught?

So much for being tough on crime. Our justice system is a pathetic joke, betraying the victims at every turn and letting the perpetrators off lightly.

Perverts abound and are often back on our streets after serving derisory sentences for a catalogue of offences.

Their victims will carry those scars for life, and - in many cases - their future victims were counting on society to protect them.

Society fails them all, too many rapists and paedophiles ruin young lives and steal innocence, and get away with insultingly short sentences compared to the frequency and magnitude of their crimes.
