Thirty five year old Laurent Atte Aka, originally of the Ivory Coast, now resident in Plymouth, is starting a 15 month jail sentence after posing as his twin brother to enter the UK and claim benefits.

Aka entered the UK illegally in 2000, using his twin brothers identity card. His brother held French citizenship.

Later in 2000 he was stopped by police for drink driving - and gave them a false name before skipping bail. He then vanished for years.

When investigated by police over a 2005 allegation made against him by a woman, his story began to unravel when he was fingerprinted, and his prints matched those of the suspect in the 2000 drink driving case.

He still stuck to his brothers identity though, and it was only after an immigration investigation he admitted to the truth. Meanwhile, he had claimed nearly £30,000 in housing benefit and Jobseekers allowance.

As an added bonus whilst he was in the UK he married an English woman, which will no doubt make sure his "right to a family life" ensures that he is not deported.

"Laurent Atte Aka is a highly deceptive man who committed a string of fraud and immigration offences after posing as his twin brother" said Steve Magee of the UKBA Criminal and Financial Investigation Team.

He may well be just that, but it seems pretty likely that he is in Britain to stay now, our chance of deporting him now that he is married is probably about zero, as are the taxpayers chances of getting back the £30,000 he defrauded.

Just another day in the enrichment of the South West, with added crime and costs, all paid for by you.
