Police have swooped on a gang of muggers who have carried out more than 50 attacks on children, during some of which hammers and knives were used - and, wouldn't you just know it, the Fagin like leader of this band of criminals is an immigrant from Ghana.

The arrests of ten people came after the gang carried out a 9 month reign of terror across South London, during one of which a an off license was robbed at gunpoint by gang members.

During their muggings, many of which targeted schoolgirls, police said that a disproportionate level of violence was used, often leaving their victims with injuries.

On one occasion the 25 year old gang leader, who came to the UK from Ghana 10 years ago and who is apparently here legally, sat and watched from a local branch of McDonalds as his gang carried out attacks and robberies.

It is believed that the as yet un-named enricher Fagin controlled a gang of at least 20 young people, and lived off the proceeds of the crimes which they committed.

This new raid saw 10 people arrested, some of whom were as young as 14, and police revealed that an earlier raid in connection to the gang saw seven girls, aged 14-17, arrested.

Detective Superintendent Gerry Campbell said that more arrests were likely, and that the gang were "robbing people throughout the day and night"
