Another day, another raid on a restaurant in the South West turning up an array of illegal workers, this time at the Saffron on Queen Street, Newton Abbot.

Officers visited the Saffron restaurant on the evening of 29th July, and checks on immigration status of the workers revealed that 6 out of 9 of the staff there had no right to work in the UK.

All six illegal workers were Bangladeshi. One was found to have entered the UK illegally, the remaining five had remained in the country after their visas had expired.

The six were taken to Torquay police station, and then five were transferred to immigration detention pending deportation. One man was released on bail on condition he reports to a police station once a week whilst his removal from the country is arranged.

With 6 out of 9 of their staff detained for immigration offences, the Saffron restaurant was left temporarily closed as a result of the UKBA raid.

We've said it before and we'll say it again, the restaurant and fast food industry is an area which illegal workers have made their own.

These raids keep turning up illegal workers, and it's just the tip of the iceberg, the number of people involved, and the number of food businesses taking a chance with these cheap workers is staggering.

Every illegal worker represents a job lost to a British worker, and undercuts the wages of those legally entitled to work here.
