Four year old Yeovil girl Georgiana Kelly has been refused drugs to treat the rare form of juvenile arthritis from which she is suffering - amidst suspicions that it is down to a postcode lottery and reluctance to fund the costly treatment which doctors have suggested she receives.

Despite specialists in Bristol recommending the treatment with Tocilizumab, and saying that it would have a 90% chance of success, Somerset Primary Care Trust rejected the funding application.

"My body and soul and all my taxes have gone to the NHS, and we all feel very let down. We were shocked at the decision, and I think the specialists in Bristol were too. I feel like this is probably all down to funding, a postcode lottery comes to mind. I know how important it is to look after the pennies, but this is too important" said Georgianas grandmother Kay Hiscock.

Somerset PCT say that Tocilizumab is not licensed for use on children, and instead want Georgiana to undergo an alternative treatment not recommended by her doctors and which is unlikely to work.

Just give this poor, brave girl the treatment her doctors have recommended. One presumes the doctors know best what is likely to work, and a childs life and future is too valuable to deny her whatever drugs the doctors think are best to treat her.

If as a society we can squander billions on the EU, foreign aid, bank bailouts, we have seriously failed our country if even one child here, nay one Brit of any age, faces a postcode lottery to receive the medical treatment which they need.

Our people, especially our children, should come before all else.
