Nearly half of those charged with the offence of murder within the Avon and Somerset area were on bail at the time of the offence according to information recently released by the police force.

During the 2010/11 financial year Avon and Somerset police charged 14 people with the offence of murder - and of those, 6 people were on bail at the time they committed the alleged offence.

Two of the alleged offenders had been released on court bail, and the other four had been bailed by police.

The Avon and Somerset area - thankfully - has a low murder rate compared to much of the country, but it is truly shocking that close to half of the murders in the area were seemingly committed by someone who had been bailed.

The figures come on top of recent news that people on bail are accounting for a surge in crime figures, with fully 1 in 9 crimes across the country, a figure which may actually be much lower than the truth due to differences in the way in which crimes are recorded across police forces.

Of course, the figures may well be far higher still - unless an offender is apprehended then there is no way to know whether an offence was committed by someone who was on bail or not.

The Mails story on the subject points out that one in five murders in Merseyside where people where charged were allegedly committed by someone already on bail for another offence.

Avon and Somerset, although having a lower total of murders overall, sees almost one in two murders allegedly committed by those who are on bail.

Expect crime figures for bailed offenders in the South West, not just for murder but for just about every other crime, to grow continually worse as Ken Clarke presses ahead with his penny pinching plans to save money off the prisons budget.

More and more crimes, crimes which need never have happened had the offender not received bail, will become the norm. Once again it is the law abiding people of Britain who will suffer.

ConDem tough on crime? Indeed they are - their policies will see an increasing number of offenders bailed, and when you suffer a crime at their hands it appears as if ConDems answer will be "tough luck"
